Key Roles & Responsibilities

The Data Engineer Intern will report directly to the Director of Innovation and will be responsible for building analytic visualisations within Power BI and demonstrating their purpose to users. The Data Engineer Intern will be required to work independently on a range of data problems and provide visualisation of that data. The problems will be specific and well defined yet the solution and ‘data wrangling’ will be down to the engineer.
Whilst analytics and visualisations are mission-critical to the role, once those responsibilities are dealt with there is more freedom in the type of work available: from writing articles for our blog on technical subjects you find interesting, to training and deploying machine learning models, and taking certifications in relevant skills, so long as the task fits a business need it’s within the realm of possibility.
There is also the possibility of being put into rotation around the company to work on similar tasks for other departments, through this you will have the opportunity to learn about how various departments within DSP interplay to provide our renowned IT consultancy and managed services.

General

  • Work independently on a wide range of data problems
  • Expected to undertake self-study and learning to improve their knowledge of analytic and visualisation tools
  • Extend their remit beyond data and analytics to potentially investigate and work on other IT projects where appropriate
  • Undertake professional certification in line with the company objectives
  • Providing analysis and building visualisations of data
  • Developing and documenting the capability of data visualisation tools
  • Administering the Cloud environments and datastores where appropriate
  • Writing and performing data manipulations in SQL, Python etc
  • Building and training Machine Learning models
  • Build engaging narratives around customer data with analytics and visualisations

Key Success Criteria 

  • Be able to work individually and collaboratively within a team

  • Strong communicator with an ability to express technical and non-technical challenges to a wide audience
  • Strong written and presentation skills to be able to ensure all work is documented to the highest standard

  • Be respective to feedback and developmental critique; have a growth mindset
  • Willingness to learn, adapt and challenge themselves in undertaking new challenges in new technologies

Experience and Background 

  • Undergraduate in Computer Science / Maths / Engineering / Business
  • Experience with scripting languages
  • Understanding data analytics concepts
  • Experience in Cloud ML platforms and or Power BI would be beneficial but not a requirement

Interview Process:

For this role, there will be two rounds of interviews, first with our Data Team Lead where there will be a technical test to assess your data analysis capabilities, and an opportunity to discuss experiences from your life which demonstrate the core capabilities of a successful candidate: data analysis, programming,  communication, and initiative. Then there will be a final interview with the Director of Innovation to give you an opportunity to demonstrate your passion for data analysis to the senior leadership team.

Location / Special Requirements

Flexible with weekly travel to a DSP office (Leeds, Nottingham, London, Basingstoke) as and when required.
