Overview

As a key enabler for its customers to fulfil their strategic and operational responsibilities, NECS provides a comprehensive range of data management services.

This DSP-led project involved the migration of applications from ageing on-premise hardware with poor performance and capacity to a suitable target platform, as part of a data management solution which NECS provides to one of its key ICB (Integrated Care Board) customers. The applications were developed in-house with unique data and using Oracle's low-code platform APEX. NECS worked with DSP as an external delivery partner for Oracle cloud services. The goal was to simplify the migration process without losing the existing data and for the new platform to handle a larger influx of data than the previous legacy infrastructure.

The Challenge

  • Applications were running on ageing on-premise hardware and with poor performance/capacity
  • Customised applications were developed in-house with unique data and using Oracle’s leading low code platform APEX so needed a suitable target platform
  • Limited Oracle skills internally across existing footprint to complete migration or support thereafter
  • Azure was already approved by NHS Digital for use by commissioners, but Oracle Cloud needed to be fast-tracked as an NHS-approved cloud platform.

The Solution

  • Planned and comprehensive migration of applications, working alongside NECS internal development teams
  • DSP's experienced and extensive in-house development team ensured that the APEX code was seamlessly migrated across to the new cloud platform
  • DSP provided a full Cloud Service Provider (CSP) Managed Service to manage the platform from the cloud infrastructure level to the Application Tier
  • DSP and Oracle supplied the client and NHS framework governing body to ensure that they had all necessary cloud security information - i.e. that Oracle was an accredited cloud platform of choice

By migrating applications into OCI, we were able to provide universal access. The project has had positive outcomes through increased performance, greater data availability and a resilient platform with suitable backups/DR.

The Result

  • Applications are now performant with in-built resilience by using the Oracle Cloud, i.e. eliminating the risk of hardware failure
  • Custom applications can be further developed and upgraded to later versions of APEX with confidence and no fear that these changes may cause hardware failures or poor performance
  • DSP as a trusted partner manages not only the migration, but all support of the cloud infrastructure and databases post-go-live
  • Rather than maintaining expensive and failing on-premise hardware, the organisation has eliminated the need for additional investments in local hardware and specialist Oracle DBA skills.
