Overview
Thungela, which means “to ignite” in isiZulu, is a leading South African energy business, focused exclusively on thermal coal production. Previously the coal division of Anglo American, it is one of the largest pure-play producers and exporters of thermal coal in South Africa based on aggregate coal reserves and marketable coal production. Thungela Resources was unbundled and separately listed on the Johannesburg and London Stock Exchanges during 2021. They wanted to move their applications to Oracle Cloud Infrastructure (OCI) so enlisted the help of DSP and AMOSCA, because of their expertise and specialist knowledge.
The separation from Anglo-American presented Thungela with the requirement to create a new IT infrastructure from scratch and implement a significant number of business process support systems, with an immediate focus on their critical financial systems including Hyperion Financial Management (HFM). The milestones of the separation process also imposed a tight window of opportunity within which the migration needed to take place.
Thungela retained the services of AMOSCA, specialists in Oracle’s Enterprise Performance Management (EPM) products providing a range of services to customers including Anglo American, to advise and assist with the provision of the company’s new reporting environment. AMOSCA approached DSP, as experts in moving applications to OCI, to assist with Thungela’s migration. Both companies worked in tandem and united their existing knowledge and experience of migrations to move Thungela’s Hyperion application into a public cloud platform.
DSP and AMOSCA worked in close partnership with Thungela to ensure their estate was fully optimised, and would perform at the highest levels. The migration itself was carefully planned to create minimal downtime and disruption. Additionally, to guarantee the estate would be optimised in the long term, post-migration proactive monitoring, regular health checks and performance reviews were built into the provision.
With DSP and AMOSCA’s assistance, Thungela successfully migrated to OCI and is now able to receive the benefits of streamlined infrastructure management, consistent high performance, scalability and lower total cost of ownership. Long-term, Thungela can now focus on other priority areas for the business whilst DSP and AMOSCA continue to manage and maintain infrastructure at an application and database level.
