IT Asset Management and Reporting Application

The Challenge

A customer faced a number of challenges accessing information about their IT assets with their existing software:

  • Retrieving relevant information from multiple data sources was complex and time consuming
  • Manual data extraction from Excel spreadsheets as well as manually enriching this data in spreadsheets
  • Reports existed on different hosts, servers, business services and databases in separate locations

The Solution: 

The customer decided to use Oracle Application Express (APEX) as a low code development platform to develop a bespoke application addressing these challenges. The customer then approached DSP to use our development expertise to build this solution using APEX to show a comprehensive view of their IT assets. The application connected to and reported on, the information held in the database, populated by a number of diverse downstream systems, wherein the data is transformed into a generically defined dataset. DSP's development experts built a homepage that the customer used as a dashboard to link to crucial information such as a number of live services and VMs. It also included a facility to upload data sources.

With this new application the customer now receives:

  • Functional specification and wireframe screen designs detailing exactly what will be delivered
  • Report screens - including drill-down detail views
  • Functionality to update and maintain ‘CMDB Layer only’ data
  • Dashboard screens
  • Topology screens utilising the native APEX tree functionality and/or plugins to display data in a hierarchical manner
  • User security configuration screens and modifications to the underlying database structure
  • ‘CMDB Layer only’ database structure, auditing functionality (i.e. tracking changes to data) and configuration screens (for users to maintain attributes), including bulk upload facility (from flat file) for user-defined attributes
  • Front end access of audit information
  • Vast reduction of time and expense by eliminating manual processes
  • Real-time, easily accessible information
  • The functionality of Excel, with its easy-to-understand, graphical representation of data, but in APEX
