What I do

My manager and I are working on developing a data science practice at DSP. The company already has a long-established pedigree of providing database solutions and support, so now we want to help our customers with capitalising on the analytics their data can provide them.

We focus on the data engineering and data science piece of the pie. This means we work on ETL pipelines, extracting, transforming, and loading data into databases/data warehouses, cleaning and aggregating data modelling it to capture the relationships within it and then developing dashboards and reports which visualise key insights from the data. We even go as far as to develop machine learning applications to provide predictive capabilities (check out the work we did with the Nottingham Biomedical Research Centre applying machine learning to improve the outcomes for recipients of cochlear implants).

Why I chose DSP

DSP stands out as a major player in the world of database service providers, partnering with major cloud providers like Oracle, Microsoft, and Google, and yet DSP is a relatively small company compared to others in the space. This means that as a techy person, it stands out as a place of great opportunity, where you can work with all of the major cloud providers and still have a big role within the company instead of being a small cog in a large machine.

When I interviewed here, I saw the team had a vision to expand beyond servicing just databases. They saw the value that analytics had provided them with internally and wanted to develop that skill set into a practice. Therefore, it was the perfect opportunity for me to develop myself technically, whilst helping build a larger vision alongside my managers from the ground up, with the support of a larger technical team behind me.

What I like best about my role

My opinion and expertise are valued and have a meaningful impact, and I feel like my managers and the rest of DSP will listen to what I have to say. You can have a real impact on the direction of your team and by extension the company. I also like that my progress and achievements get recognised by the CTO, CEO, and plenty of other VIPs, who in other companies you might struggle to even get a meeting with. 

My greatest achievement whilst working here

Building the Data Science Internship Programme. When I joined, the team already had a few interns but the data practice they were trying to build was still fresh and I got the chance to show off essentially and help them build it. I had a few meetings to discuss vision, strategy, and direction, and I put together a job description and we started building the intern programme together.

We’ve since gone through 2 additional recruitment cycles in the 2 years I’ve been working here, we’ve had so many amazing students join the company, we’ve helped them develop their industry skills and in return, they’ve helped us build the Data Practice we envisioned – they’ve all also had a say on the direction we should take it.

Back when I started we were a small internal department, we’ve since grown, and we have a number of customers whom we provide our data engineering and analytics skills to instead of solely being an internal practice. I’m most proud of being able to say we’ve started expanding our internship programme and even hiring back those interns once they finish their education. Ultimately it’s the people in the team that help us develop and deliver our vision, so I’m happy to be able to work alongside such amazing and intelligent people and to be able to give back to them as well.
